A few days ago just after I had uploaded my Saturday #OOTD on the gram (you know you gotta keep up with the gram so be sure to add me HERE) and was scrolling though my photo archives, it hit me how much I love me some denim. Believe me, i never considered myself a denim chic.
According to the poll I posted on Instagram over the weekend where 78% voted “YAAASSS” and 20% voted “GUESS SO” in response to whether I should write a post about building your denim Wardrobe or no so here we are. But before you get into it, make sure you check out my guide on the Do’s and Don’ts of Denim HERE. Denim comes in a number of shades a light wash, medium wash, and dark / black wash so whatever your preference is, I am sure you will find your perfect match. However if you are a tad conservative like myself and love your dark colors – I must say, a light wash is a must have.

Your Denim Must Have Pieces;
Call me “Maya always on the budget” but before you go all out, make sure you invest in some versatile denim pieces that you will be able to play with and style differently over time (Remember I am the wardrobe maximization Queen), and these are my go to pieces to if you want to build your denim Wardrobe;
An oversized jacket; All I can say is you MUST have an oversized denim jacket in your closet. Period. I won’t even begin to mention how obsessed I am with mine. Check out one of my many looks HERE and HERE.
A pair of high waisted jeans / skirt; I am one for clothes that suck my flab in so if its high waist, then its for me. I am sure your body will agree too. So a skirt or pair of jeans according to your preference but I am definitely a pair of high waisted jeans kinda chic.
A button up shirt; Whatever your style is, I am sure you will find yourself the perfect fitting denim shirt as there’s a wide range of them on the market. Take your time and find your perfect fit or four and get playing. Check out one of my favorite denim shirts HERE.
A pair of boyfriend jeans; My love and hate relationship with boyfriend jeans finally came to an end when I found a perfect pair after several failed attempts and I must admit, it wasn’t easy task.
The Extras;
After having scored the 4 denim basics then you can think about the extras like a denim button up dress, ‘dem booty shorts and mini skirt or just anything denim.
TIPS:
- Leather is Denim’s best friend. I find that a black or brown leather belt or purse are always perfectly matched with denim – not forgetting that leather jacket. Please try pairing leather with denim and let me know.
- Levi’s and American Eagle are my favorite denim stores. Trust me a pair of Levi’s will be worth the investment.
- Thrift stores are always denim jackpots. You might be lucky and score yourself some Levi’s or American Eagle denim pieces.
